I had a spat with my aunt about something that is very similar to this question. You see my father had passed away and I lived with my aunt for a short period of time. As I was moving out she said that my situation with loosing my father wasn’t as bad as my cousins’ situation (her kids) with their dad. My dad was involved in my life. Sometimes he wasn’t, but for the most part he was involved. Were my cousins’ father was never really there. So I was wondering is it better to loved someone and to lose them or is better to have never loved them at all? Does it depend on the circumstances? If it does what makes certain situations different?

I feel like it is always better to love someone. Even if you lose that person, at least you had the experience of what love truly is. I feel for a person who never got a chance to love someone because they never met them. That is so sad.

You haven't lived 'til you've loved (and you only go around once).

Try not to worry about your aunt's comparisons of loss. That is pointless trying to compare the pain of the death of one loved one with another. Forgive her and move on.

i honestly feel that it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. sure the aftermath is going to stink when the person goes away but that only makes you stronger.

It is much better to have Loved than anything else. The loss is going to happen anyway, nothing is forever... as bad as we would like it to be.

In this situation it is better to have loved and lost. Your aunt is right.

Love and loss. Life is too short to not experience everything, painful or not. It lets you know you are still alive.

never would have missed one second of unconditional love, the pain is unbearable when they are called home, but the memory's, are to be cherished, yes with love there is pain and heartache, but you also grow to be stronger.

never loved at all, in my opinion. It's kinda like rich people who become poor. It would have been easier if they never had anything.
