This would be a matter of personal choice.

Although if possible you should purchase a system that is certified "Microsoft Vista ready" any new PC is adequate for most tasks. As of this writing I would recommend:

2.66 GHz or faster processor
1 GB or more of RAM
80 GB or larger disk drive
64 MBs or more of video memory
CD/DVD-RW drive (optional but useful)

The above description would be the 'least that I would recomment' anyplace you can add to will be a benefit to you...

Check out Sunday sales at the Computer sales stores... Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA, Dell you will have to check out online.. there are notebooks out there for $600, you will just have to look..

Right now, Office Depot is having a great sale! One day left.
There have been some great sales on Acer's at various outlets; I just bought one for $399! Check newegg.com and pricegrabber.com.
For general and school use, these budget laptops are good buys. Watch for another sale around Thanksgiving.

I also recommend Dell for its prices and reliability, and you can get really good deals on the Dell Outlet. Search for "Dell Outlet" on the dell.com website and they'll have really reduced prices on refurbished and practically new computers. Happy hunting!
