When my kids were younger I told them the same thing. I'm apposed to fighting unless it's a matter of life or death. However, it didn't work much when they were younger and it didn't seem to work much when they got older either.
You can try discussing the problem with the student. If you don't feel like you can do this or it doesn't work then I would suggest going to the counselor. Tell the counselor your not wanting to be a "tattle tale" but just looking for ways to resolve the problem without resorting to violence. Counselors are trained for this.
I just thought of this... I wouldn't reccommend it but it worked for my son. He always had trouble with other students until high school. He just started acting crazy. If someone got in his face he just acted like a lunitic. They would back down - they thought he was crazy. (and I wondered myself)

If the person is threatening you, go to the principal, not the teacher. There really isn't anything that the teacher can do. If it is just someone saying crap to you just stand up to them. Most bullies are basically cowards and will back down when confronted.

A teacher isn't your enemy. Yes, if there's a serious problem, then you should ask them for help or advice.

No....i think you should just handle it on your own. A teacher can only make it worse on you.

No, The teacher will say something dumb to her like. please stop bothering her, or they would move her like one seat away from me or something..like that makes a big difference..
So now I just take it into my own hands..if you know what I mean.
