What is a true freshman? What other kinds are there? I hear this when I watch college football.

Thanks

There are 2 types of freshmen in major college (d1) sports.

-Redshirt freshman is a person who went to college, but was redshirted before the season. They still work out with the team, but are ineligible to play. When you redshirt (you can only do this once) you save that year of eligibility, so they are actually a sophmore, just have that year of eligibility saved.

-True Freshman is one that does not redshirt. A person that just comes onto the team and plays in the games during their first year.

Medical redshirts may also be granted if season ending injuries occur, etc.

A freshman (true) is a one who has just matricuated as opposed to a red shirt freshman who is in his second year of school but did not play his first year and so has four years of eligibility left even though he's in his second year of school.

a true freshman is a player that was a senior in high school the year before. a redshirt freshman could be a second year player, but their first year was redshirted because of injury or they are in a 5 year program.
