Actually I prefer 'tard
Why does this bother you? Why is mentally handicapped better? You know mentally retarded is a medical word used because it accurately describes the person retard means slowed, their brain development was/is slowed. The only reason it would have negative connatations is if society has placed them there, just like they will for whatever word replaces it such as mentally handicapped which will also eventually be a bad word because people are afraid of the condition and don't want it. Thus this is a completely retarded thing to be debating, because whatever word, it could be f***ing brilliant, it will always eventually end up being a bad word because it describes a bad situation

There's no such thing as a "politically correct person" -- just different levels of awareness and care about how one's language hurts or uplifts others.
To answer your question, yes, the term "getting gypped" is derogatory, since it has an implied very negative connotation against an entire ethnicity of people.

Well, on this forum, the word retard fits a few people perfect, and as far as politically correctness, No One Tells Me What To Say
Concerning Any Issue. P C means nothing to me.

While I agree with your dislike for the word "retard," I have difficulty figuring out what to use to name that diagnosis. I work in the mental health field, and a lot of my clients are "mentally ill." Many people confuse being "mentally ill" with what those in my profession would call "mentally retarded" or "learning disabled." How would you designate or differentiate them?

They don't. And "mentally handicapped" isn't very PC either. Try 'people with learning difficulties.'
Have never heard of 'gypped' or 'jewed'. Presume these are Americanisms.

Retarded is used to describe someone without certain mental capabilities. It is a medical/psychological term:
Affected with mental retardation.
Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed.
