If you slice through a circular cylinder in a direction which is not
perpendicular to the axis, then the shape of the figure produced
will be an ellipse.

If therefore we have a cylinder with its two end planes not at right
angles to the axis, then the curved surface area would be the
perimeter of the ellipse multiplied by the perpendicular height.
Since calculating the perimeter of an ellipse involves a particularly
difficult integral, it is certain that there will be no convenient
formula for the surface area.

You know the diameter and the height right?
Basically you want he surface area of the curved part plus the surface area of the circle at each end.
1) Calculate the circumference
2) Multiply the circumferece by the height
3) radius is half the diameter
4) Surface area of the ends is pi x radius squared
5) Multiply the answer in step 4 by two (two ends)
6) Add the result in step 5 the the result in step 2

Hi. I think it's pi r squared times h, with h being the length (height) of the cylinder. The Math girls and guys will blast this if it is wrong.

You`ll have to multiply:
2 diameter of the base * Pi * height

the area of the two ends = 2*pi*r^2
add that to the cylindrical part which has length equal to the height and width equal to the diameter so h*2*pi*r so add the two

2*pi*r*h + 2*pi*r^2
