Any number raised to the power zero equals 1. Doesn't matter if it's positive, negative. That's because of the fact that
(x^m)/(x^n) = x^(m-n).. If m and n happen to be the same, then
x^m = x^n so (x^m)/(x^n) = 1. But then x^(m-n) = x^0 and that has to equal 1 also.

An exponent represents the number of terms in a sequential multiplication. Any number raised to the power of one is equal to itself, since there is only one term. A number raised to the power of two is multiplied by itself once, since there are two terms and one multiplication (e.g. -2 x -2). By definition (since they didn't know what else to do), mathematicians defined 1 as the result of any number raised to the power of zero. Also, negative exponents represent roots. 2 raised to -2 is the square root of two, for example.

I hope you've learned the law of exponents... if so, remember...
x^a/x^b = x^(a-b)

Then think about this example:
x^2/x^2 = x^(2 - 2) = x^0
x^2/x^2 = (x * x)/(x * x) = 1

Therefore, anything to the power 0 equals 1.
