The man who spoke to you obviously had the manners of a warthog. You should not feel embarrassed about reading the newspaper in public. The days of women having to be illiterate are far gone, and it's time that the caveman who spoke to you realizes that.

When I see people reading the newspaper in public, I think that it's wonderful that they're literate and interested in current events. That is, unless the newspaper reading is taking place in the bathroom and I'm next in line; in that case, I wish they'd hurry the heck up.
As for the guy who commented on it, who knows what he was thinking? He may have merely been making conversation. Or maybe he was one of those people who thinks he's clever and witty when he makes others squirm, but he really isn't. Or maybe he thought you were really attractive, and was a little surprised that someone could be attractive AND have a brain or two in her head.
Don't worry about him. Read your newspaper and enjoy it. And while you're at it, have a scone or a slice of pie for me.

I think he was just trying to find some way to talk to you. Do not be embarrassed, there is nothing unladylike in reading a newspaper. No man would EVER think that way. I am a man, and have never heard any other man say that.
He was perhaps trying to make a "pass" at you. Men are lonely, and it is difficult to approach woman, as they face rejection, so they try to find SOME excuse, some reason, to try to start a conversation. There is nothing wrong with that.
Nothing wrong with either of you!
Be grateful he thought enough to talk to you.
Do not be ashamed. You have no reason at all.

That was a pick up line to start a conversation with you. Women don't often read newspapers in public for some reason, guess it's a girl thing, but there's nothing wrong with it.

I think the guy who said that does not know how to talk to/with people. It was a dumb thing to say and he likely walked away thinking to himself "oh, you know how to pick up pretty/smart women?" He was likely trying to pick you up and did not do a good job of it.
The smart alec in me would want to respond nah, "I just thought I would hold it like this while I eat my breakfast" I know I would be thinking that, though like I would just smile a "that was dumb" smile and go back to reading my paper.
Don't EVER give up reading something you wanted to read because some guy says something stupid.

Naw...sometimes people can just say things in a way that you don't 'get'.
That's what I think happened here....maybe he was 'hitting' on you. Anyway...don't be so thin skinned....of course you are allowed to read the paper.
Oh yea, no driving down the road reading unless you're legally blonde ...for down below.

don't be embarrased. you are just being informed. Don't let what other say sway what you do for enjoyment. There is NOTHING WRONG with a lady reading the paper.
that guy probably needs to do a little reading himself

As a woman, you are right to be sensitive about being seen reading something like the newspaper.
Next time put it in a brown paper bag until you get home.
Instead, why not be seen reading some magazine publications, such as for example `Hot Studs`or `All Beefcake`?
Let us know how you get on.

I gotta disagree. A chick reading a book or newspaper looks smart (I like that). If you like reading that stuff, I say do it. Do you think the guy was flirting with you?
