What you probably found is a wasp. Some are somewhat similar to bees in coloration. The link below has pictures of several that might be mistaken for bees.
Not that bees don't get that big. The largest species of bee has a body about 1.5 inches long, but they only show up in Indonesia.
So-called 'killer' bees are almost indistinguishable from normal honeybees. It's not their size that makes them dangerous, but their behaviour - they just get riled up easier and they have a tendancy to swarm.

Well, its not a killer bee. They look almost just like a honey bee. What you are describing sounds like a hornet.

Then its probably a queen bee, killer bee's are really rare, where does youre friend live, cant be in a populated area, if its really a killer bee
