it's a diversion from focusing on ones self. in a competition, it's easier to point fingers & blame. In a solo act, without a panel of judges, except one's own inner guide.....that can be a scarier gig than a beauty pageant. Alone, in your own self, creating a life for just "you"..........yikes...we are our own worst critic. It's easier to change the channel. great question!

It's only a popularity contest if you want it to be. I choose not to live my life trying to be popular. The more popular you are the more criticized you become. Everybody expects the best out of you and if you don't live up to it there is hell to pay. I'd rather be a no name and just live my life to the best of my ability . I tend to ignore what other people say and make my own judgements.

the way u put it it sounds like a bad thing but u should think about it for a minute. popularity measures how much u are liked by other people, it is determined by ur social skills, ur conformism and ur succes in whatever is considered important by society at that specific time. in the stoneage a hunter who killed lots of animals for the tribe was popular, while one that didn;t wasn't, so the popular one got to ompregnate the women and the next generations were more successful at hunting.
nowadays popularity isn't about having the traits necessary for survival against the physical environment because that isn't really a problem anymore in most cases, it is about the traits necessary for having success in society, it's about being the new alpha male and female. people are physically attracted to (passing on the good genes thing), assume sobordonate roles in relation to, respect and like popular people because they seem to be succesful now or in the future, it's a form of adaptive evolution.

People are insecure and need someone to guide them on how to be.This is why the strong, secure people are always the popular ones(whether it be in school,on t.v.,or in the business world). In a perfect world, there would be no popularity,'cause everyone would be secure with who THEY are,and would have no need for influence..............By the way, good question;)..The fact that you asked says alot about you.....

Popular people are those who exhibit qualities considered to be attractive.

The contest is to determine what are these qualities.

Interesting question, thank you.

Life is so many wonderful things. I see it as a learning experience, with many lessons to be learned; that is part of the joy of not knowing what each day will bring.

It is the way we are taught or programed from birth. As kids we learn and imitate the things that our parents do that is just a fact of life.

Well, the more people you know or the more people who know you, the more power you have. You have more influence that can be mis-used to manipulate others into doing things for you.
