No, they only understand the language in which they are trained. As this story illustrates only too well:

The police department in a Midwest town not too far from here ordered a German shepherd from a breeder in Germany. When the dog arrived at the airport, the officers opened the crate. . .and the dog immediately took off. The dog ignored the orders that they gave it, and it took a few minutes before someone finally figured out why.

The prospective handler hadn't realized that the dog only understood German commands, and that's why he was ignoring their orders in English. The dog escaped from the airport, and it took the department almost two weeks to finally get their K-9 back.

I understand that the would-be handler spent those two weeks taking a quick course in German Schutzhund commands!

Dogs don't understand any words. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Studies have shown that it's the way you say something, not the actual word they respond to.

Pick a command your dog "understands", then replace it with a word with the same number of syllables and say it to your dog in eaxactly the same way as the regular command. It will behave as if you had said the original command.

So, no, Japanese dogs won't understand you. But don't feel too bad, neither do any dogs from English-sepaking countries.

My grandmother is from Japan. She has been here for about 40 years and she has always had pets. Her dogs and birds followed commands in both english and japanese. I think animals recognize sounds of words not the actual meanings.

They wouldn't respond to the words, but they will respond to tone of voice and body language. Where I live some police dogs are taught to respond to German commands so they will ignore anybody but their handler. A fun way to trick your dog is to use a very happy sounding voice and tell it that it is a sh*thead and that you are going to take it to the pound. It will wag its tail because it had no idea what you were saying, but you sounded happy. You can also ask it in your meanest sounding voice if it would like a steak for dinner. It will put its ears and tail down because it thinks you are mad at it.

A dog understands only the commands in the language it has been taught.
It's learned behavior to obey commands whether it's english, spanish, german or whatever foreign language was used.

The dog doesn't distinguish languages, however it "understands" the commands it has been taught the way it was taught.
The majority of our drug and search/rescue dogs came from Holland and Germany, so they were taught in Dutch and German.
That's why you hear a lot of "Sitz" "Platz (pluts) and "Fuss(fooss)" at demonstrations for Schutzhunde(protection dogs).

NO!
Language is only sounds and each language sounds different.

I had a friend who brought back a German Shepherd from Germany WWII. He was guard at a prison camp and made friends with a Colonel, and the Colonel gave him his dog.

He spoke German so the dog understood him.

If I spell this correctly, to call the dog,
"Komitzi hea".
It was funny to hear him speak to the dog.

Dogs understand dogs... we are all foreign to them. They learn commands, key words in any language... it's word association with behavior/actions.

Dogs usually respond tto the sound of a voice rather than words. For example, a friend of mine whose dog enjoyed going for walks would say "gopher", and the dog would run to get it's
leash.
