most anything can...the purpose of an artificial ecosystem is to try to recreate the natural environment in an area that is not normally like that...take for instance a bio-dome (for example) trees...desert...bugs...animals...people all living in an artificial recreated environment that is controlled but the ADAPT to any variables that were not included OK...now down to micro organisms, i.e. bacteria cultures, normally grow inside of other living organisms, but put them in a pitry(sp?) dish and incubate them (an artificial environment) and they grow, then are studied and we find out out what is infecting the living organism right.

House mouse (Mus musculus)
Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus)
Roof rat (Rattus rattus)
House sparrow (Passer domesticus)
House finch (Carpodacus mexicanus)
European starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
Opossum (Didelphis virginiana)
Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

Why? Because these organisms are generalists and the artificial ecosystem of buildings, housing structurally approximate their natural environments, and humans tend to be extremely wasteful which provides food sources for many of these animals.
