depends on what setting it is on..
like everyone else said, heater doesnt but ac does.
but any time the defrost is on, it also turns the ac compressor on to take humidity out of the heater box.
so if you have the heater on the floor or vent setting then no.
if you have the heater on defrost setting, it will use the same amount of gas as using the ac

No. Simply put, the heat comes from the engine thru the vents to you. Using the a/c uses gas. A lot of people think letting a "warn-up" by idling will help but it doesn't. Drive it around for a little bit. Not too fast though.

Like many said, no. If you get really nit picky it is very minimally draining the electrical system with the fan, however the heater actually helps cool the engine by circulating more coolant. This can actually help mileage. (almost undetectable however)
A/C obviously uses a compressor driven by the engine (like the alternator. This puts more resistance on the engine and reduces MPH.

No, because the heater uses waste heat from the engine cooling system. Air conditioning however does cause engine to use more gas because the engine must power the air conditioning compressor which cools the car interior.

No the heater works by circulating water from the radiator thru the heater core, which is just a small radiator. This process does not add any extra strain to the motor.

No. In a break down situation, it will help to take heat off an over heating car, as long as you are still moving. The A/C will use more gasoline as well as your head lights. More power generated by your alternator, in which, it is powered by gasoline. Good question.

Whenever you use any accessory on an automobile that requires power, that power is generated by your motor which uses gasoline to do so.

heater and air conditioner both use more gas, when you use those your car looses power and therefore uses more gas, but heater uses less power then aircon, that's why it's harder to notice it
