I have no idea why they are rude other than the fact they are just jerks! I have been going to the VA hospital for 10 years and I have not had one pleasant experience there even though I am a polite and nice person. The people they hire at the government hospital are usually ghetto types of people that have no social skills, no sense of customer service and are just plain lazy and rude!
I have written countless complaint letters which have absolutely no effect on their poor customer service. I can tell you horror stories of people at the VA hospital but my latest experience there was the receptionist was this mean nasty black woman who worked at the front desk. She sees me there a few times a year and although I am obviously female, she loves to call me "sir" on purpose just to piss me off. One time I came an hour early to an appointment and checked in. She hated me and she failed to let the doctors know I was here. So when my appointment time came they skipped my appointment because she didn't tell them and I waited an additional hour for them to tell me that. I finally went to the doctor who told me to wait 3 hours for a cancellation. Luckily I had a cancellation but because of this incompetant *****, I waited 5 hours to get seen!

If the receptionist doesn't like you they will make you wait. Another fat rude nasty black woman with a bad attitude that worked in the MRI office, made me wait 2 hours for my appointment and let everyone AFTER me that checked in go before me because I complained about her in writing. Then I saw her take my file which was in the front of the doctor's door and file it BEHIND everyone else's files so I would purposely be last and wait another 2 hours. I complained to the supervisor but they didn't do anything. I hate the VA hospital and I would gladly PAY for a civilian hospital rather than deal with these incompetant lazy idiots. Hope my experiences make you feel better that you aren't alone. I hate going to doctor's offices mainly because of the treatment of the staff.

Hmm. Well I have many run ins with nurses and such, they are nice to me, but maybe that's because I am the one paying them...a lot of the time they are rude and or snappy because they do get an awful lot of money just like some doctors. But also they are put under pressure most of the time and sometimes they are actually interns and are stressed about doing things right to get Good job. But then again sometimes its just the person and they aren't very nice. :)

Usurping their physicians' authority...case in point....infant approved for a pricey shot for the first year of life to prevent respiratory infections the first 12 months of life...(a necessity)....parent is a physician....when insurance called the Dr.'s office for approval, the woman answering said the parent had ordered it herself.......took 2 months to straighten it out.....in the meantime parents were paying out of pocket 2000.00 a month for injection. They begin to think "they" have earned the MD license.

They have an incredibly boring and repetitive job and get tired of dealing with the same junk everyday.

I think it is because they are understaffed, underpaid, and under appreciated. Everyone wants their attention right now, everyone thinks their problems are more important than anyone elses, and the staff just gets overwhelmed.
I find that if I smile and am patient, they always treat me kindly and with respect.
