Ok, this has been the day from hell. I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad. It has windows 98 installed on it. I purchased the wireless router by Linksys. It say's compatable with Windows 98 and the computer supports the other setting. I installed the software on my desktop with no problems. When I went to install on the laptop, it said that I must have Internet Explorer 5.5 or newer. So I tried to connect directly from my modem to the notebook, but I ran into a problem because the cable is smaller on the notebook. So I thought ok, I will save the newer version of Internet Explorer to my flash devise. I saved it from my PC. However, the notebook said it needed the installation software for the flash drive and unfortunately I no longer have it. So then I had a USB cable and connected that from the modem to the laptop. The laptop needed the installation software, so I downloaded the software from Comcast. After I restarted I got a message saying that the connection could not be

found. So finally I was able to get the software installed into the laptop without upgrading Explorer. However, I can not get the wireless to work. I called tech support at Lynxus and they configured my desktop but said I would need to call IBM to configure the laptop. IBM said they can not help with 98 versions. So now I am so confused and frusterated. I really needed this computer and I know $130 is not a lot of money. But to a single mother with three kids it is. PLEASE HELP ME SOMEONE.

Does your laptop computer even have wireless? I can't think of an older laptop that had wireless internally. Or do you have it external somehow? Still trying to figure out your setup.
Laptop to dial up modem using a USB cable right? This works?
Where is your router?
Routers use RJ45 connectors, they look like bigger phone plugs.

You said: "So I tried to connect directly from my modem to the notebook, but I ran into a problem because the cable is smaller on the notebook." I think the term "cable" you're saying is the "port".

Nowadays there are two ports at the back of the laptop- these are the LAN port and the modem port. LAN ports are wider than modem ports. The cable between the DSL modem and the PC/Notebook are called LAN CABLES.

Does your laptop has LAN port? Buy a LAN CARD if you don't have.

or

If your laptop has a PCMCIA slot, buy a Wireless Notebook Adapter (i recently bought one from Dlink, DWL-G630 Wireless G Notebook Adapter). With this adapter you can connect to the internet via you wireless router.

your message was clipped after this:
om Comcast. After I restarted I got a message saying that the connection could not be

but if you downloaded using the laptop you were obviously connected, if this is after a restart a driver was likely not installed correctly. Windows 98 does not have native support for USB, you need drivers but these are available from the (flash key) MANUFACTURERS' website, if the connection hole is smaller the laptop has a telephone modem and not a built-in NIC so USB will be required

the answer: you will prefer drivers on your USB modem. The rant: there is not any intense high quality thank you to place it, USB-based internet purely sucks. I notably recommend you the two get an ethernet based device, or a instantaneous based one. I even have heard of ISPs utilising USB based broadband modems as the thank you to be sure purchasers purely have one computer on the internet, then they fee extra to have extra desktops linked. it extremely is a rip-off. if it extremely is the case, then call for an ethernet based answer and in the event that they could't furnish it then swap to a various ISP. Ethernet is the same old, there is not any reason to no longer use it.

Wow, you have SERIES of problems, connecting one to another! (a domino effect?). Anyway, your ONLY problem (the ORIGINAL one) is to CONNECT your laptop to desktop and have an Internet connection.

(1)
First off, you have to buy a PARALLEL laplink cable. Inform the store owner the exact name as they are similar to parallel~parallel BUT it's not - it is a special parallel cable (see link of picture of parallel laplink cable). And why parallel? Because you don't need any driver for it. It CAN connect your laptop to desktop (run your new connection wizard - direct connect).

In this way, browse through your desktop on Internet and GET all the drivers you want and pass it on your laptop.

(2)
If you successfully connect your laptop to your desktop through this (1), then you have two options now to connect to Internet.
One is use ICS or through proxy server (download from tucows).
