Just use a regular gate right from the game.
Or put the kids in a sunken area. They cannot climb stairs, so if you arrange a multilevel area of the house, they will stay in the room you put them in and no one has to open and close the gate.
On ground floor houses, just remove the floor tiles in the chosen area, and dig a little sunken area with the shovel. Then put in the little steps to the next level so that parents can step in and out to care for the kids or carry them around. Works great and no more toddlers playing in the toilets. :)
