I'm writing a piece for an encyclopedia on what type of health care is given in prisons. This modality will include a segment on psychological care. I was wondering if anyone wanted to contribute information?

The only thing I can tell you is that they get alot more health care than anyone on the street, we pay for it in our tax $$$, But also they dont get help right away when they need it. They have to wait in line with the rest of the prisoners. Especially after they keep moving and moving and moving you around to different beds and rooms and stuff like that. Good Luck!!!

health care in prisons to some may seem like good quality care but it is not. The only difference is no one is requesting an insurance card. The basic care provided in a prison is about the same as the care that is provided at a health department. If it is out of the physicians scope of practice they are then sent to a speacilist. Psychological care is truly needed with all inmates. I do not know the background of every inmate in prison but I think I would rather fork over their healthcare expense in taxes than to see some of them on the streets. Wether a person is in prison, state provided mental intstitue it is the states responsibility to care for all of their basic needs, shelter, food, safety, etc it is Humanisitic

I work at a prison, and I can tell you that the state of our medical system is in such disrepair right now that there has actually been a court reciever appointed to help correct all of the problems that are occuring. However, inmates are entitled to better, quicker health care than most people I know on the streets. Visit www.cdcr.ca.gov and click on the medical link for detailed info

People in American prisons get EXCELLENT health care! Actually it's much better care than people without health-care insurance. on the "outside" get. Nurses and doctors are available 24 hours a day. Psychological care is also offered. Plus they are provided with all their medications....free of charge. You and I pay for this!

They have all the psychological and health care they could ever want. For free!

They also have workout rooms (gym), library, and 3 meals a day. More than most "free" people have.

I don't know about health care. But for dental care, they will pull any problem tooth instead of doing any work on them. (This I was told by a dentist who used to work part-time treating inmates. He spent most of his time pulling teeth instead of treating them).
