If three people pay a motel clerk 10 $ each, totaling 30 $ {see details }?

and the motel manager told the clerk to return 5 $ as a rebate.the clerk gave each man one dollar back and pocketed the other two dollars. So if aech man paid 9 dollars equalling 27 $ and the clerk has 2 $ in his pocket he stole totalling 29 $ , What happend to the other dollar ????????????????????? thanks Michael .

The three men paid $27 for the room but the hotel only got $25 of it. The rest $2 was stolen by the clerk.

The way the story is told, the $2 extra that the men paid is counted twice, once by them paying it and once by the clerk pocketing it. Similarly, the $3 returned to the men is not counted at all. By not counting $3 and double counting teh $2 there is a counting error of $1 which is the "other dollar" you are looking for.
