The solution: You will need drivers for your USB modem.

The rant:
There's no nice way to put it, USB-based internet just sucks. I highly suggest you either get an ethernet based device, or a wireless based one.

I have heard of ISPs using USB based broadband modems as a way to ensure users only have one computer on the internet, then they charge more to have more computers connected. It's a scam. If this is the case, then demand an ethernet based solution and if they can't provide it then switch to a different ISP.

Ethernet is the standard, there is no reason not to use it.

USB Cables:
(1) USB to Ethernet (see link1 for picture).
(2) USB to USB bridge (see link2 for picture).

You did not stated how did you link your laptop to another through USB. It should be either of the above. If you're using #2, then you should use ICS (Internet connection sharing) or a proxy server (like FREEPROXY) to connect to the Internet.

I do hope that you wouldn't connect directly with an "ordinary" USB to USB CABLE to another pc or it will DESTROY one or both machines! (see laplink features).

Depending on your version of Windows, your laptop may need the drivers for the modem you are using.

If your modem did not come with a CD, then look for the brand and model number and go to the modem's website to download the drivers for your version of Windows.
