Think of this problem in terms of money.
You borrowed 73 dollars and then you needed to borrow another 63. So that means you are "in the hole" 136.
I also used this way of teaching it. Think of that "minus" sign stuck to the 63. Then put a positive/add sign in between. That will give you (-73)+(-63)=-136
But if you really think of it as money then you understand it much better.

Ok, subtracting a number from a negative number will ALWAYS give a negative answer... so if you want think of it as 73+63 which equals 136 and then just add the negative sign:)
