That depends on who you ask. A botanist, chef, and Gardner would all would tell you that it is a root. A government official, or a nutritionist will tell you that it is a vegetable, just like they tell you that tomatoes are vegetables, when in fact they are big berries. For the sake of keeping things simple the government calls them vegetables, and no one really knows how many serving of roots you are suppose to eat a day.

No its a vegetable. Fruits have seeds on the inside So technically tomato is a fruit and banana is a vegetable. I know it doesn't make sense when you say it like that, but that is the rule

potatoes are from under ground.
they could actually be considered more of a plant root storage system. Carrots as well. Turnips, etc.
It fits in the veggie category.
