Or nearest the person or do you think that just having the bit-to-pull easibly visible is more important, thereby negating the entire argument?

I think it is very important to have toilet paper near the toilet. If company is expected, it should actually be in the same room as the toilet. I realise that I may seem to be obsessing here, but it really isn't nice to have to traipse down the hall and into perhaps someone's bedroom to find the toilet paper, with your underpants half-way to your knees, maybe even through the kitchen to find a roll of toilet paper. As for hanging it on the wall, well, some do and some don't. And I have better things to do than worry about the direction it unrolls.

No no no it makes me so mad when my hubby puts the toilet roll on so the paper is hanging the wrong way! I have to take the roll off and position it correctly. If it is the other my kids end up pulling loads off in one go where as not nearest the wall they usually only manage to yank off 1-2 sheets at a time. I feel that it also looks a lot nicer. Positions of toilet roll are extremely important as this can affect my whole going-to-the-toilet experience!

depends if you have small children or pets in the house. If you do, you don't want it hanging over the top and down near the person. reason being, if it is hanging that way, you end up with the entire roll on the floor if you turn your back for 2 seconds. safer to have it hanging from the side nearest the wall. Much less of a chance of it being tugged on.

An odd question but quite sensible. I have always placed the roll
away from the wall! Reason being that the tiled wall dampens
from the vapour of the hot shower and makes the paper stick.
However, I think a lot depends on how deep the shaft of the
roll is into the wall. In any event, I will continue as always with
no argument.

I think there's a law that says nearest the person. If you put it nearest the wall the Toilet Police will get you!

I always put mine on with the end hanging nearest the person otherwise you have to fumble underneath next to the wall to pull the paper.

I prefer it hanging from the side nearest the wall. It's more aesthetically pleasing. If I'm in someone else's bathroom, I have been known to rehang the toilet paper if it's facing the other way... Pet peeve, I guess!

depends if its embossed or not, if it is....then nearest the person so that the pattern shows on the right side...if not and its plain...then nearest the wall as it looks tidier, instead of the paper hanging out away from the wall.
how strange an I?

Well, I think most of the people use it nearest the person, even there is no social rule at all for that subject it is possible that this way is more practical.
