I have similar problems, spent all last night sorting out my paperwork, rather then beat up on myself for not sleeping. However, hot milk, a banana, a good book, lavender bags, or sprayed around the room, there are hundred of possible things, and its a case of finding the right one for you, try not to take sleeping tablets, maybe something from the herbal shop?
You have my empathy, not good is it, oh yes, my sleeplessness has been stress, get a note pad and pen by the bed, and write down your thoughts till you run out, then sleep, and worry about it in the morning, now that is a GOOD one, night night zzzzzzzzzz

I can relate totally to the question - stress no matter where it manifests from is stress!! You need to identify the source - you might no be able to remove it but knowing where the stress comes from is half the battle!
As for the getting to sleep this is what worked for me:
Always have a glass of water next to the bed (getting up for a drink is a trigger for the body to tense up and wake up), lay on your back and start breathing deep and slowly -
then slowly tighten your toes and count to ten then rest for ten and repeat.
Next tighten your leg muscles count to ten then rest for ten and repeat.
Next your but muscles (twice same as above)
Next lift shoulder up to neck (need to feel muscles working - twice same as above)
Next the face (crazy to look at but close eyes and tense the mouth - use all the face muscles you can - twice same as above).
After you have worked up the body lay there and breath slowly - having worked and relaxed the muscles you should feel warm and carm - if really tease repeat one more time from the toes up. This really help me when i was really stressed and not able to sleep.
If you have a significant other sharing your bed it can help if they lay with you quietly doing the counting for you in a soft voice, this helps relax the mind as well.
I hope this help you - good luck!!

Try thinking happy thoughts before going to sleep or even yoga. No caffeine beverages or chocolate at least 2 hours prior to sleep.

Do something about your stress levels. Counselling can help you learn to cope, and can help you decide what to do to decrease not only your stress levels but how to decrease your reactions to stress.
