The check engine light comes on, and they replace individual parts until the problem is solved. I know money is tight, but they could get the vehicle checked out for the money they are spending on parts! Getting it checked out saves alot of headaches, and you know what exactly needs replacing.

Its ok to start with an oxygen sensor replacement, but any other probems you have to go to a garage.

Hate to be offensive, but most mechanics know basic fixes for basic problems. Anything more and they are right in the same boat. My shop has roughly equal tools and most mechanics aren't that well educated and they are not the type of person I would trust my life to. Factory trained mechanics maybe, otherwise waste of $ if you have the FSM and know how to read. Anyone can buy an obd code reader and look up in the FSM what the problem is and go through the same steps as a mechanic for $50-100/hr. Plus most mechanics make a huge markup on parts.

yes it is stupid when most of the shops do it for free . Hoping to get your business. Most shops charge around 50 per hour by the book. The dealers are 85 per hour and up. That's why the shop spent money for the computers so they can fix whats wrong. for the fastest and cheapest way they can. But they arent the problem , they try to solve the problems . Without the shops and mechanics How much does it cost you not getting to all the places you need to go.If you dont like or are not happy with who did work last time go somewhere else theres plenty of shops with guys trying to work for a living too. They want you to come back to them next time something is wrong and they can help you or fix it. Or be like me drive a 1979 firebird or a 1984 chevy pick up . But still know your car and take care of it, dont wait forever when something is wrong .GET IT FIXED.

Most do-it-yourselfers know how to check the engine codes when the ECU throws a light, then figure out what parts could be causing the problem.

Many times, an engine light doesn't just point to a single replacement, but a range of them.

Some times people would rather try to fix what they think is broken rather than pay $75.00 an hour or more to see if someone else can find what is causing the problem.

If the person has the knowledge and ability to fix the basics before they give up and take it to a mechanic, let them. It may cost more when the mechanic needs to re-fix their fixes.

I do not have those skills, but I may have to delay fixing something because I do not have much income.

Good grief!! What do you care if someone waste their money replacing things instead of getting it checked at a garage? You must be a mechanic. I hate it when people worry about what everybody else is doing and doesnt mind their own friggin business.

In my case i prefer to fix my car myself because everytime i go to a mechanic I either get inferior parts put in that I have to replace (and then pay for the replacement) or I wind up having to pay an arm and a leg for "labor". I'd rather save myself the headache and fix it myself.

Why should I give you money to tell me whats wrong with my car when I know whats wrong with my car and can fix it myself. Every time Ive taken my car to a shop they have ripped me off finacially and have made my car worse, Just so they can make even more money to fix the problem they created. Because of that I had my grandfather teach me to fix car my car. I no longer take that chance anymore ...it takes too much emotional energy to deal with lousy mechanics that steal from folks.

The alternative is to go to the garage, where they hook up to a computer, and then change the same parts, one at a time, in the same manner, at shop rate for labor and their markup on parts.
