Pregnancy in the body is entirely an endocrine event, i.e., it is entirely hormonal. Every single thing that happens regarding pregnancy is controlled by hormones.

The hormones that maintain a pregnancy have varying effects outside the pregnancy itself. They cause everything from temporary brain shrinkage to skin changes and symptoms like nausea, fatigue, headaches, hot flashes, and the like. Emotional symptoms result from the effect the hormones have on brain hormones (neurotransmitters) and it's suspected they affect the inhibitions center of the brain, causing outbursts and crying fits in public because the woman cannot inhibit this impulse.

If you ever get a chance, take a college Endocrinology class. It's facinating.
