Oh, my word, FAVOURITE???
There are so many, it depends upon my mood.
In summer I like operetta (Guilbert & Sullivan is always good) and light things like the marriage of Figaro
In winter I go for Wagner in a BIG way.
Any time of year I love Monteverdi - his Orfeus is very lovely, but I think my favourite of his is the Coronation of Poppea.
And then there's Verdi, but you really have to be in a Verdi MOOD....
And of course there's Don Giovanni!!! Yeah!!
(sorry, you've got me all excited now...)
;-)
PS - have you ever heard any English operas like Henry Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas' or John Blow's 'Venus and Adonis'?
Mozart has some funny, light ones like 'Cosi fan tutti' as well as more heavy ones. It really depends on what you like - there are operas for all tastes. Have you heard Wagner's Ring cycle? or perhaps you like French? Bizet? There are so many.
Gosh, I love opera.
