Morally, you were wrong by a mile. But if you said that it was your fiance, your mom will eventually understand.
I would have just told the mom that she was being childish and not considerate enough to the fiance. I then tell the fiance she needs to stop fighting with the mom, grow up and sort their differences liked civilsed people.
Sit with them talk things through one at a time, alternating between both sides so there is understanding. Work out solutions, stick with the solutions and pray they won't make silly arguments again.

If they have truly been equally wrong then you don;'t need to be taking anyones part in the argument...you need to find a way to get them both together and tell them that you do not wish to take sides, that you love them both and that it hurts you if they argue. Sometimes, you just have to step in and take control cos if you don;t you will end up losing one of them....do you really want to choose between your mom and your fiance...could you choose? So yeah it is wrong to take sides against anyone if they have both been equally wrong and its wrong if either of them EXPECTS you to as well.

Please, next time word the question correctly. I think you meant is it wrong for you to take your fiance's side in an argument between her and her mother? If that's what you meant, unless you are asked to verbally choose sides, you may agree with her mother, but remain objective and supportive of your fiance' without openly choosing sides.

Yes it is wrong, don't get mixed up in their arguments, as much as you would like to! Let them argue it out, just walk away, go outside! Or go for a drive, if they are arguing outside!

Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place!! No matter what you do, you're screwed.
Could you take NEITHER side, and instead help them both to compromise?

Your fiance should respect her elders. Both adults should be discussing issues not arguing...
