My house was built around 1955. Could this be the original water heater?

No tag on the water heater, only instructions on how to light it.

If you think it's old replace it
the money you save from the difference in energy efficiency is
worth it
the life expectancy of a water heater is about 10 - 12 years
i've seen lots that were 20 plus years, never 50

There should be a plate on the water heater with a manf. date stamped on it along with model#, serial#, and possibly BTU rating. If it's the original I'd be contacting crane and brag my way into a comercial for thier heaters longevity. For a new one that is. But I'll bet it's not a '55 model. Sorry.
