Start by relaxing. You cannot relax if you are thinking, 'I gotta do this I gotta do that'.
Don't do work in your leisure time because then it won't be leisure.
Read a good book, do a crossword puzzle, build a ship in a bottle, take up a project that gives you pleasure.
Remember; anytime that you exercise your mind is a learning experience.

Since you posted to philosophy, you might be interested in reading philosophy books in your spare time. If this isn't your idea of leisure (too much work), you could listen to a "talking book" or foreign language learning CD (alternatively, you could rip it to an mp3 player) while drinking lemonade and reclining in the sun.
You could also use leisure time to develop a skill, which can range from the practical to the merely entertaining. For example, you could practice twiddling your thumbs! This is something I did for awhile, and it was kind of amusing.
Just in case you're really bored and want to give it a try... here's the basic 2 thumb twiddle:
(1) Touch your left index finger to your right thumb, and your left thumb to your right index finger.
(2) Now release the "left index/right thumb" pair, rotate both hands, and reconnect the fingers on the other side of the "left thumb/right index" pair.
(3) Now release the "left thumb/right index" pair, rotate both hands, and reconnect the fingers on the other side of the "left index/right thumb" pair.
(4) Repeat steps 2 and 3, for as long as you'd like to twiddle your thumbs.
That's just the beginning. If you're up for a challenge, you can try connecting 3 or more digits from each hand, disconnecting and reconnecting the pairs in sequence, to twiddle your fingers and thumbs in ways that look truly complex and strange. With practice you can do this more quickly, and you'll have a cool parlor trick for breaking the ice at parties!

Ahhhhh. Learning how to enjoy and use leisure is not an easy thing. You have to actively relax and pay attention to the now and feel and breathe and smell and see and listen. You learn that way. You will learn about everything you create that way.
