well if you want to speed up your internet connection, you could delete the cookies (a piece of data which often includes an unique identifier, that is sent to your browser from a web site you visit, stores as a file on your computer, identifies you as a unique user and track your web usage.)

Easiest way to do this is to right click on the internet icon, go on properties, you will see the button delete cookies and just press it. You could also clear the history and delete the files too.

Depends on how old and what your current hardware configuration is... most likely, Adding RAM will be most beneficial and cost effective. Go to http://www.crucial.com http://www.kingston.com and pick your computer from the selection utilities and you can be certain you get the correct RAM. Ideally, for everyday use, you need 512 MB to run XP. If you're more of a power user, than you want 1 GB or more. And if you want your computer to be ready to run Vista, then you want 2 GB or more.

Other things can help a little - for example, defragmenting your drives can help a little - but don't expect it to be noticeable except when you copy large files that were already fragmented the last time you tried copying them.

You can also go through your startup programs and disable those that you don't need (for example I usually disable Quicktime and Real Player - they will still work, they just won't load when your computer starts so when you do use them (probably once a week, if that) these programs will take a little longer to load. BUT, in the mean time, everything else will have more resources to work with and may work a little faster overall.

Don't be downloading anything, try the following and see if that helps:

click on TOOLS

click on INTERNET OPTIONS

click on DELETE COOKIES, DELETE FILES and CLEAR HISTORY.

once you have done that do the following:

Click on START

ALL PROGRAMS

ACCESSORIES

SYSTEM TOOLS

DISK CLEAN UP

This will bring up files that you may not need, check through them to see that you don't want them, then press okay.

The file that builds up the most is usually the Temp Internet Files, do this on a regular basis.

Too much junk on your computer slows it down, as well as having too many programs open and any one time.

All the best.

1/. Add more memory (ram).
2/. get rid of software that you do not need.
3/. if you have a lot of photos/film etc on your hard-drive, transfer them to CD or DVD to release space.
4/. do a disc-clean and a defrag`.
5/. mainly, get rid of all the crap that you do not really need on your hard-drive.
6/. have a good registry mechanic
7/. make sure you have a anti-spyware on your PC
8/. you can also use `msconfig` to uncheck software that starts when you boot your PC
9/. you could also consider `overclocking` your PC. But you need to be a really `confident` pc user to do this, and bear in mind this might void the warranty of your PC.

1. Get rid of any programs you don't use.
2. Get rid of programs at start up which aren't needed.
3. Defrag your system
4. Do a clean up.

Without any other information from you, it's a hard question to answer more fully!
