I sold a book on the internet. I sent out the book using USPS Media Mail to the buyer. After a few days the Shippping Label neatly cut out from the packing was returned to me by USPS Official Mail, nothing else with it. Today the buyer contacted me asking for the book. What does it mean, is the book lost or are they holding it because of incorrect postage? I thought its just a way of Delivery Confirmation.

I'm sorry to tell you that the envelope became separated from the contents in transit. There should have been a letter of explanation with the label. You may go into your local post office and complete a form 1510 but it is unlikely that the contents will be found and sent to your recipient in a timely manner.

I deal with people everyday sending books in the mail. The worst problems are with college students sending heavy textbooks in paper envelopes or encased in paper bags. Get a box or use the free tyvex envelope and send it priority. If you insist on using sloppy packaging techniques, on the inside of the package, attach another mailing label to the book itself. At least that way it will come back to you, postage due, if the wrapper is torn.

Return the label to the local USPS Office. Ask them what it means. I fear it might have been destroyed. Did you have insurnace? That will take care of the contents if you need to refund the buyer's money. Good luck.

It sounds like you may not have addressed it improperly, or perhaps you sent it incorrectly. Without a doubt, I would call your local post office and ask them to be sure. Or, go through www.usps.com. I just referred this site to another person here.

Best of luck with your situation.

P.S. Call the person who you were mailing the package to and explain to them what happened, that way, you also won't destroy your reputation with other buyers.

They probably destroyed the package and that was all that was left. You will probably have to refund the money.
