You dont hear about any place unless something (generally bad) happens there. You hear of places like Moss Side cos of the things that happen there. I live in a quite nice village in an area of England which is supposed to be desirable. We had a triple shooting in the village pub a couple of years ago - everyone heard of our village name then. But nothing since - non of the good stuff which may happen.

I tell that tale only to illustrate its not just areas like Moss Side where it happens.

Because the only thing that happens in Moss Side that's even vaguely exciting is the bad stuff. Although I have to say, there's one of the best parks in Manchester there, and some excellent Caribbean food to be had. Mmmm, curry goat...

Stuff happens in Longsight and Whalley Range too, although being in Manchester I hear about it all the time and don't know how far news travels...

Things are a lot better in Moss Side than they used to be, in my opinion anyway.

Well, most places are only in the news when something really, really good or something a bit bad happens.
Has anything good happened in Moss Side?
There's no balance.
Although< I recall going to Manchester in about 1964, we passed through Moss Side and I remember the 'grown-ups' commenting on it then. It must have made an impression as it has stuck in my mind.

Because the fecking media takes a small story and builds it into a mountain.
And it is not just Moss Side. Where you been living for the last 50 years? :-)

Moss side has a reputation for crookery, so the media keeps an eye to report the latest depravity as it happens.

I'm a white guy ( I only mention this because areas such as Moss-side and Toxteth (Liverpool) are reported to be 'black' and thus are stigmatised as such).

Areas such as these are not 'ghettoes' - and often can contain the most vibrant community life, with everyone of all colours/races/ethnicities or whatever the latest buzzword is, doing their best to live together. Visit the pubs.

There is gun-crime in Clacton, Essex, near where I live, and I disarmed a man with a knife outside my own home in middle-class Harwich in Essex.

Moss-side, Toxteth, Lozells (Birmingham) will always make the headlines because they are large areas of cities and have a high population of Britons of different colour and culture to us whites (I hate the term 'Ethnic Minorities - most of you guys are born in Britain and are British in my book). A lot of similar white crime goes unreported, because it is carried out by whites.

good question- it's the only place in the world (England is my home country and i've been to some pretty nasty places in the world) where i've been scared of 8 year olds.
When locals tell you that some kids held up a petrol station/ stole a car/ killed a person with an automatic pistol and then you see some nippers cycling past with a real/toy gun i found myself filling my pants lol
There are a lot of lovely people in Manchester and an amazing diversity of cultures and people but good god those sort of stories don't 'alf put the wind up you!
