A hotel is where you stay and must sign in, have full service etc
A Motel, could be described as a "Drive in" hotel. You get the keys
on the way in and the bill on the way out. A Motel is cheaper and
certainly more convenient for undercover love affairs.

Motels usually have parking in front of your room.
Hotels have a large parking structure and you enter through a lobby to get to your room.
This designation is always a little fuzzy - with some motels acting like hotels, and the reverse - but that's the main distinction.

There really is none. The term "motel" is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (ca. 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service).

I think a hotel is supposed to be better than a motel, many times upon visiting one you feel there is a no difference; but typically that's the way people think

A motel is normally only 1 or 2 stories high and typically you drive your car up to the door, or very close to it. Hotels tend to be larger, on a smaller piece of land and tend to be many more stories than 2. Normally there is a central parking lot or underground parking but you certainly can't park outside the door.

A motel is a Motor Hotel... Motel; they sprang up with the advent of the interstate highway system - generally bargain priced and suitable for a family - a uniquely American phenomenon.

Motel meant motor hotel, they were usually one floor and you could park your car wight outside your room. They were less expensive. Hotels were the ones that had lobby/s concierges and more services like room service, laundry and dry cleaning and restaurants . And they charges more and were considered more high class. Now many chains that used to be considered hotels are offering a cheaper option like Holiday Inn Express that does offer some thing like continental breakfast but not full services.

Motels have rooms that you enter from the outside. Sometimes you can even park in front of your room. They typically have one to two floors.
Hotels are all enclosed. You enter your room from inside a hall way. Hotels often are larger structures with muliple floors.
People tend to prefer hotels because of security issues. They feel safer opening up their door and seeing the hall way versus opening it up and seeing the parking lot.

A motel is a place that you enter your room from outdoors, like a La Quinta, and a hotel is all indoor- you have to go through a hallway to get into your room.

Along with the other answers, motels seem to be more for extended stays as well. They are more affordable for week and month long stays.
