HP, while investigating some leaks to reporters allegedly made by their own board members hired some private investigating firms and those firms used improper practices to investigate who made the leaks. Some of the methods involved accessing the phone records of the reports without proper authorisation to identify who they were calling and who was calling them.
In these days of privacy conscious world it was a big no-no. This event when disclosed created this scandal and today just some time ago it is reported the HP has fired it's board chairman, Patricia Dunn who ordered the investigation.

Dunn resigned effective immediately and Hurd has become the chairperson.
It is all related to spying on board members and journalists.
