Run at least five miles a day every day, than build up, to more miles. Slowly increase the speed you run, when you run long distances. You should also practice speed workouts, because that is key. Sprinting four hundred meters and jogging two hundred, than repeating, for about 4 time before stopping is good. Do like 4 of those and you will get faster..... But mainly practice. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Practice practice.
The key is your endurance. Your default workout should be a five mile run. About 2 or 3 times a week, you should work on some sort of speed workout. If you are still in school, talk to the track coach. He should give you a good idea of what you can do to prepare for the track season to achieve your goal.
Do not run with ankle weights (as suggusted) unless you want to get injured. When you run, you already put 150% of your body weight worth of pressure on your feet. A couple more pounds does not give you any benefit, but does increase injury risks. This is a common mistake, because sprinters often train with heavy vests on. However, that is to increase their power and help with their starts. You don't care about your start, you should worry about not getting hurt.

You should train 5 to 6 days per week. Run four to six miles a day. In your training, you should include one workout of hill training per week and one day of speedwork on the track. Be sure to also include a tempo run where you are breathing hard, but not running all out. Good track workouts for the two mile include 800 meter repeats, 1300 meter repeats and 1500 meter repeats. Run that your usual race pace with a 1/2 lap to one lap recovery. Be sure to warm up for a mile before and cool down and stretch after.

I always ran with ankle weights on for over a month. When the weights came off it was much easier to go a longer distance faster. I was military and average a little over a 4 minute mile. Even ran 5K and 10K races
