Think of it as chapters in a regular schoolbook or novel.
1. The first thing you see is the name of the book's section
Example: JOHN 3:16 /Look in the beginning (table of contents)
that will tell you where to find the book of John.
2. Next, is the number 3...you will find the number 3 by itself on the top of one of the paragraphs...This is your CHAPTER 3. On the side of each little paragraph (or in between sentences)
look for the number 16 within..this is your VERSE.

The bible is the recorded events of many writers. Each book of the old testament has an author. Each book records pertinent information. The timeline is important. Each book and new testament letters were divided into chapters and verses which was done by the translator for the King James Version. The original text was not set up this way. The original text was not made available to the lay people. The original language was not English. Their are different versions of the Bible. The new testament is made up of letters that were written after the crucifiction of Jesus Christ. The Vatican in Rome is suppose to have the original writtings and won't let just anyone see them. A concordance will give you the ability to look up any word and find that word with reference to the Book, chapter and verse. Not all concordances are complete. A local Christian store or one on line might be helpful. The bible is an extrodinary work of writings. Historical facts have been taken from the Bible and you have read about them in your history books. The Roman empire, the Persians there is more information that can be written here. Enjoy your studies.

The numbers that look like time probably are the Chapter and verse listing. The other comments explain this pretty well. As to looking up things in the Bible, a Concordance is a good place to start. Usually there is one in the back of the Bible. It is Alphabetically listed and it has names, places, words. It then gives you several places in the Bible that the word is used along with the Book, Chapter and verse. So that it is easy to find.
I hope this helps you. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of more help. vin49p62@yahoo.com

Bookname Chapter:Verse
For Example John 3:16 is the Book of John, Chapter 3, Verse 16.
Look in John, go to the big #3 and then the small 16 under it.
Voila.

LoL.... well... they way a bible verse is written is like this:
Romans 5:1
That means Romans: u have to look it up in the table of contents, happens to be in the New Testament (the 2nd half of the bible), and the first # is the chapter. so Chapter 5, verse 1. the first verse in chapter 5.
if it says Genesis 2:7-10
that means Book of Genesis (1st book in the Old testament), Chapter 2, verses 7-10
once u get the hang of it, it'll be easy!

Start with the New Testament. THEN go back and read the Old. The Old testament is history. In the New Testament, we're given a new covenant (promise) which supercedes ALL of the old covenants given in the Old Testament.
Get a concordance. In it you can look up a word and it will tell you which scriptures contain that word.
Best wishes for understanding!

um i'm pretty sure there should be an index that you can follow. When you see something that says like maybe: 3:13-32 for example..that means Chapter 3 verses 13-32.
