The statement came as Abbas' moderate Fatah faction struggles to win agreement from the governing Hamas to recognize Israel in negotiations to form a national unity government. The militant Islamic group Hamas won elections in January and has refused to recognize Israel, end violence and honor past agreements with Israel.

Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting Thursday that he has recently sought to establish a government of national unity "that is consistent with international and Arab legitimacy" and that responds to the demands of the key parties promoting Mideast peace - recognition, ending violence and honoring past agreements.

What do you think?

A nice dreamy statement since Hammas disagrees totally with him. They said they will never recognize Israel as a state and they still think it should be destroyed.

Did you prefer to declare his communicate is already historic past? i think you're in all probability impressive. by the way Jerusalem replaced into in no way coated in any contract of talks to be transferred by Israel to the arabs. So i think there'll be no peace interior the middle East, the palestinians will proceed to be afflicted by the occupation and the Israelis from the Kassam rockets. Is that a soltuion? Is that the moral of the storay? You tell me.

It could be that he's just bullcrapping the world as most people are saying, but I think he's legitimately scared of Israel now. Think about it in this way. Once someone stands up to a bully after a long time (in Israel's case, decades), then that bully will stop bothering him. After Israel kicked Palestine's ar$e and proceeded to hurt Lebannon, I think Palestine's going to see the sleeping monster they've awakened and will decide to back off.

Palestinians are tired of war and they want it to end. but i am sure Israel will come up with some excuse and attack again. remember while the Lebanon thing was going on nobody heard anything about Palestinians or hammas attacking anywhere. but now that Lebanon war is over they go right back to war with Palestinians. hopefully both sides are serious.

I think he'll be dead before Hamas plays nice with Israel. Sad, true.
