Because you don't know the material yourself, you can NOT teach it or help your granddaughter with it. DUH!! It is as simple as that!! Let her go to her teacher after school for extra help.

You know, you're a charm for wanting to help your granddaughter with her homework. However, the one person who knows the subject better than anyone is the teacher. If your granddaughter doesn't understand the assignment, that means she isn't "getting it" in class, either.
She needs one on one time with her teacher so that they can get on the same page.
The homework is HER work. Not yours. You can help her with the social skills she'll need to walk up to her teacher and say, "I'm not getting this. Can you take the time to explain it to me again?"
Good luck.

Each chapter has example problems that are fully worked out. Your child needs to go through those examples until she fully understands the how and why.
If there's something specific she's not getting, then ask the specific question here on Yahoo! Answers!

You should buy her some alegebra guide books. She can refer to those books anytime she has a problem with a question. I can't name one specifically for you because there are so many of them. But most are very helpful.

I think you may encourage her to ask the teacher to help and also express interest in the material she's learning. My mom helps me review by asking me to "teach" her the lesson. I think it works BIG TIME!
