A Simple Heart. I loved this story!! I still read it from time to time as well. Madame Bovary is a classic, but I enjoy this a lot more than I've ever enjoyed Madame... As an English major, I suggest A Simple Heart.

While Madame Bovary is certainly his best work, A Sentimental Education is easier to read and understand. I think it is a bit shorter as well.

In English, I agree with the other poster-Madame Bovary is the classic. In fact, it's one of my favorite books.

Easy Flaubert?
Well, I guess I'd agree with Ivan. "A Sentimental Education," would be my recommendation, though that book, too, is bottomless. Many would not be familiar with it... For reasons that elude me entirely it always seems to get second shrift compared to his other novels.
