I have a 8 year old HP Pav 4535 with I believe 64 RAM, does that sound right? Anyway, can I upgrade the RAM and speed it up? I have a newer hard drive 40 gig so It may be worth it. The computer is fine and all but a little sluggish at times. I do have high speed connection too.......thanks.

RAM is dirt cheap these days and will certainly help speed thinks up. I added an additional 128 mb of RAM here , cost me about $15.

However, there is a maximum amount of RAM that a motherboard can handle. If you are lucky, your mobo will both be able to handle it and have an availible empty slot so that you can still utilise your exsisting RAM.

Perhaps this site can help:

The MB may not accept the 40g HD. You may need to flash the BIOS. Yes, 64meg RAM sounds right and it is cheap, but you have to have a source such as e-bay. You have to know if it is DIMMs or 72 pin SIMMS. It is also possible you are loaded with spyware which can slow the computer to a crawl. Try running Spybot and AdAware. What operating system are you running? At 8 years it could be Win 98. It needs to be at least 98SE. Don't run ME. If you can upgrade it you can run XP. Having said all of that, if you can't do all of this yourself, you are probably better off getting a new computer. Prices have come down.

Increasing the RAM unfortunately can only help a liitle in terms of processing speed. The main speed factor comes from the CPU chip. If you dont wish to spent more, then increasing the RAM is the only option for you. Connection speed relates to what type of internet line you use instead of the PC. However it is still best to run with a higher speed PC to get the optimal connection speed effect.

Don't bother upgrading.
I once upgraded my memory for $100 when a whole new computer costs under $400

You should just buy a new computer by looking at your Sunday circulars.. Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Depot are your best bets.

What does the computer documentation say?

If you don't have the documentation you can find it on HP's site..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=bph05058&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN is the address for yours.. see what they have to say and go from there.. good luck.
