I'm really struggling a lot with a certain co-worker of mine. Every time I ask him to do something for me that is in his job duty, he bites my head off. In a work enviornment where we are suppose to work as a team, he is out for himself and wants to always pass the buck to everyone else when something goes wrong. Can someone give me some advice on how to rise above the situation? My boss really likes this guy, and I don't know what else I can do to resolve my situation with him. Today along angered me. He got really drunk last night, called in sick, knowing that his back up was already taking a vacation day. He bragged to other co workers that he was doing this! I don't want to quit my job, I love what I do, but something has to be done about him. Any feedback would be great.

document his activity.
this includes what he told other people
that got back to you.

also, the next time he is asked to do something as
a member of the team. he should comply.
document that too.

so document and rise above it all.

In my experience, people like that usually
self destruct.

Do whats required of you in your job. Have you tried speaking with him about the situation? If you dont feel you can have a civil conversation with him, then speak to your supervisor about it. Explain your concerns, give examples and go from there. Once you speak to your supervisor, I would document that.

Hopefully efforts will be made to provide some relief to the situation. Dont expect anything "magical" to happen though. You may still have to work with him and if he chooses to improve, it will be a work in progress. Just make sure things happen within the boundaries of the law.

Best of luck.

Look for a new job. He's the boss's favorite. You have no chance. The longer you work there, the more miserable you'll be and just waste your time. You're going to leave anyway so cut your losses.

Wear a wire and record him. See if you can get a transfer to another office. Get a group together who will go to the boss with you to file a complaint. Or you can do to him what he does to you. See how he likes it.

You should make sure that you don't do things to cover for him. If his work goes uncompleted because he isn't there, then your boss will realize he is slacking. I don't encourage you to do anything deliberately to point that out, though because it will only come back to appear as if you set him up. Good Luck!
