why do they need to protect their heads when the few brain cells they have are in their **arses** ......
BTW- american footballers are bigger than rugby players, er people ever heard of jonah lomu, martin bayfield or jason leonard, don't think i'd want them running at me,,,, ( actually scrap that, jason leonard can run at me any day,,)

I'll have to assume you're talking about football.
I think it boils down to... football is not about the sport, it's about image. When football first came on the scene it was a far more aggressive sport... and didn't have the padding it does today. Because American football players are so image-conscious it's important for them to maintain a healthy and unbroken body. That's why American football players make and continue to make far too much money.
Football has replaced baseball as America's sport... baseball belongs to Japan now. I suppose one could say, it's all America has left so we need to protect our players. To answer your question, they wear it for protection. The real question, and perhaps the one you meant to ask it why do they need that protection. That's up to the players I guess, but one of my two answers would most likely be it.
I don't like sports but in one way I have to agree with you. Rugby is a much better sport than football. If I was forced to watch a full contact sport, I'd probably pick rugby.

Your first question should be your answer. Its a FULL contact sport.
Watching Rugby and Watching American Football, I have come to the conclusion that the two games are completely different. (duh) In Rugby, there are short quick tosses to teammates and long or short kicks. There is running and tackling and then the ball is pulled from someones legs like they layed an egg and someone runs a meter before being tackled again and the whole process starts over.
In American Football, the game is much quicker, with more open room for people to get a good head of steam going. Making contact and collisions much more violent that in Rugby.
Not to mention that American Footballers have 300+ pound Linemen on both sides of the ball, whereas Rugby players get to about 250.

Have you seen the padding that players of girly rugby, sorry Rugby League, wear these days.
Even some Union players have started wearing head gear, of roughtly the same sort of protective value that American Footballers were wearing decades ago.
Then again, if someone like "The Refrigerator" had ever been heading my way I'd have wanted all the padding I could get.

Because they aren't the most extreme of countries. High-fiving, nukes and hollywood aside, they are not much of a threat physically.
As a nation they might be strong, but individually I'm sure anyone will be able to give them a whipping!
Imagine if South Africa, Australia, UK etc could challenge them to an american football game? Any guesses on the results?

I have played both sports. I was scrumback for my rugy team and I played devensive back in american football. the rules are very different about contact. the full contact in american football is much more violent then in rugby. therefore the pads and helmit.try the game out before you bash it. it is a very tough sport

why stick to rugby?
American= massive padding and stopping every second it gets uncomfortable.
UK= full contact keep playing even though your leg is broken and your ear got pulled off
why not bravely fight wars with unmanned aircraft where there is no risk to your own side.
Logistically, of course this makes sense but ethically you are no longer prepared to die for your principles you are enforcing your principles on others in ways that they have no way of responding to unless they are more technologically advanced than you are.
Do what we say or we will get our robots to kill you!
(all in the name of peace and democracy of course)

Because they are wimps! We do full contact fighting at our martial arts school, in any given week we will have several sprains, breaks and blood loss. Why? you may ask. How many fights, that have been caught on CCTV and shown on tv or that you may have seen in first person, have the fighters been wearing protecton? It doesn't happen in real life so it doesn't happen in our school!
