Unless you can find an EXACT match for the paint on the wall, he is going to notice. And, don't forget, there is already a thin layer of old smoke and grease from the previoius owners' cooking, so a spot of new paint will be very obvioius.
Don't waste the $5.00. Just fess up and offer to help do the work to, either find the kind of degreasing cleaner to wash the wall, or to repaint the wall or the kitchen. (have you tried window cleaner?)
Unless he's a real butt hole, you guys will (eventually) laugh about the time you ALMOST burned your new house down.
If he IS that kind of a bastard, then I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't help you from here.

Wash the walls with TSP (trisodium phosphate),rinse well and wipe dry with a clean cloth.Do an area about 3ft by 3ft at a time starting at the bottom of the wall to avoid run marks.
TSP is available at hardware stores and is very inexpensive.
Read the instructions carefully on the container.

white gloss paint is not going to fix the problem your going to have to paint the walls with kilz so that the black will not bleed thru the paint first then you can paint the walls whatever color you want. to clean the hood off use a good degreaser it may work

This reminds me of the time right after my first child came home from the hospital and my wife stuck a diaper pin through her side. My wife was screaming and hollering, my daughter was laying there, and she asked what she should do.
I just told her not to remove the pin. "why," she asked. I told her that she did not want the baby flying all around the house while the air was going out of her.
Your husband ain't gonna beat you up!

Try soaking it with white vinegar first. If that does not work buy a Mr. cleaner eraser pad and scrub with dawn dish soap. Dawn helps cut the grease and the eraser helps in those little cracks on the drywall. Good Luck
