I have an essay preparation assignment to do and I'm having an awful hard time specifying a topic. My broad topic is "The Evolution of the Market Place", and now I need a question to debate. Anything prior to the 15th century is good. Maybe something along the lines of, "Peasant were the driving force behind the economy" however that is a little straight forward. If anyone can help me out, it would be appreciated.

Approach the thesis as an open market question.

Prior to the Black Death....It was a Buyers Market as many people wer competing for few jobs and the price of labor was greatly deflated. In other Words...big people (land owners) doing big things was the prevaling trend.

After the Black Death...it became a sellers market as demand for labor gave rise to European middle classes as people were able to leave the poverty and squallor behind of the old feudal system.

Hey James G,

I would be interested in how commerce in the 15th century was affected by shipping, and travel. But that might be a very small portion of the economy. What drove commerce if it was not agriculture, or what part of the economy was not agriculture. How much was based in village shops like the Blacksmith, and for my Genealogy what were the Titles of jobs back then. There are lists with definitions on the Internet, but it would be interesting to see what percentage of the economy non-agriculture generated.

Another industry, my 15th century ancestors in the moors of Scotland were into was fishing - and I am sure that they had some travel to Ireland, so was that sort of combined fishing and travel something that affected my ancestors? (or some other similar specific example).

Hey, have a great weekend.
