If they are on/near the plants, the may be soil gnats. Only sure method to eliminate soil gnats is to allow all plant soil to dry completely to a depth of 2 inches, at the same time. May stress some plants. Yellow sticky cards may trap some of the soil gnats. No known effective chemicals.

Gnats and mosquitos are drawn to carbon dioxide. That tells them that there is something living near by. That is why when you go out at night in the woods or in a field you will see a cloud of gnats swarming above you--they detect the carbon dioxide exhaled. There are carbon dioxide traps that you can buy that give off CO2 and then either shock or trap the gnats so they cannot get away. These can be placed near the front door or on the back patio and that can help keep them out of the house--plus the CO2 is odorless so there is no annoying smell associated with these appliances.

I had the same problem. I called in an exterminator. He bombed the house and poured some blue stuff down my sink drains. He left a quart bottle of the blue stuff behind for me to pour down the drain at night before i went to bed each night. This took care of the problem. I also let my 2 huge plants dry out and changed the potting soil as well. It appears that some were coming from the plants.

Fruit flies are very small like gnats. We eat alot of fresh fruit. We're always having problems with them as they come into the house with the fruit. We haven't figured out what to do with them either.
