I think it's really weird to say that a girl is "latino" instead of saying that a girl is "latina". If you want to use a foreing word use it properly or don't use it, please...
The spanish meaning of latino does not means someone that speak spanish, but someone that speak a latin language (spanish, portuguese, french, italian, romanian...).

Latino is now an English word. English borrows lots of words from other languages.

Actually the United Statesians use both, depending on various factors, including the users predilections. American English is highly flexible that way. An American dictionary is more or less a guide to current usage, and not so much a rule book as say, something that comes out of Spain's Academia Real de la Lengua.
So ... con calma ... que todo el mundo se entiende.

The word latino is used in many countries. I have never heard the term United Statesians though - until now.

Well Latin is the language and Latino refers to the people.
Where did you come up with "Satesians" ?
We are called Americans; where do you live?
If you really try It's the United States of America, hence Americans

United Statesians? haha....never heard that one....people use latin and latino....latin refers to a dead language more though, latino is specific for spanish speaking people

Just dumb terminology in referencing a person who speaks spanish as his primary language, although it really doesn't refer to people from Spain--is this stupid or what!
Same way we use hispanic as a generic slang for the same group. Don't know what is wrong with calling someone mexican, chilean, colombian instead if that is their background nationality. If they are born in America, they are Americans. End of story. To me, using the generic words such as latino or hispanic is demeaning to the person.
