I purchased an HP, XP Media Center Edition computer a couple of years ago, and pretty much ever since I bought it, I've had nothing but problems with it. It restarts on it's own out of the blue, sometimes twice in a row, and there are times when it restarts, the desktop pulls up but it's frozen and I'll have to restart it again. I sent it to HP three times, they even told me they changed the motherboard the last time, and it still happens. I thought it was a virus, but if they changed the motherboard, wouldn't it have fixed it? If anyone knows what's wrong, I would appreciate your advice.
Thanks!

i agree, sounds like a power supply issue, which, hp's are well known for... their system of powering up a pc is truly whacked out... also, could be faulty memory causing the constant power downs...

it is NOT the motherboard, and it is NOT a virus...

This problem is often caused by out-of-date video drivers. Go to the Web site run by the manufacturer of your video card and download, then install, the latest (non-beta) drivers for your video card.

Alternatively, you can try the following:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Display (in classic view of Windows XP), click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.

3.
Click the Performance or Troubleshooting tab (depending on your operating system), and then reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time until your system stabilizes.

This is the Support and Drivers site at HP. Put in the model of your computer . Download all the updates available. The updates for my model had a new BIOS that stopped all the problems I was having with my computer.

I had an old desktop PC that did that. It ended up that there were too many programs loaded/running & the PC couldn't handle it. After reformatting the hard drive & reinstalling only the necessary programs, it runs fine. U can check out this web-site (which a tech friend recommended to me): http://www.pcpitstop.com & it can run a scan of ur system to give u recommendations on what to do. Best of luck to ya!

I have seen strange problems with computers that you would have thought were the motherboard, but that didn't fix it. Replacing the power supply (much cheaper) did fix the problem. So always suspect the power supply first.
