I've decided to dive into the world of Sherlock Holmes, and I was wondering what would be the best order to read the books.

Reading them in order is not essential to understand Holmes, but I'd suggest start near the beginning and read the collections of short stories together.

A Study in Scarlet (serialized 1887)

The Sign of Four (published 1890)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains stories published 1891–1892 in The Strand.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes contains stories published 1892–1893 in The Strand as further episodes of the Adventures.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (serialized 1901–1902 in The Strand; original illustrations by Sidney Paget

The Return of Sherlock Holmes contains stories published 1903–1904 in The Strand.

His Last Bow contains stories published 1908–1913 and 1917.

The Valley of Fear (serialized 1914–1915) (briefly involves Professor Moriarty)

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes contains stories published 1921–1927.

I would recommend that first, you read a biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Then read something about the deductive method. And then try to learn something about the history of Scotland Yard. Also, find yourself a map of London during the Victorian Era. I am a Sherlock Holmes fan...so, I can tell you it really makes no difference what story you read first...but it is important that you understand the context of the stories.

There's a great book--Barnes & Noble has leather-bound books of an author's work for just $20.00, and one of them is the Sherlock Holmes mysteries. They are in order there, and it's the perfect book to curl up with. Enjoy your stay at 221B Baker Street.

You can buy them in a compilation. The first story in the series is "A Study In Scarlett.", you can buy that as an individual book. The other stories you usually need to buy together, because they're short stories. (I've just finished reading them myself.)

Look for a compendium of all his books in one. There are some out there, and they're in the right order. Hope I helped you out. ; )
