I don't know exactly what you mean by "spankings" but an occasionally swat on the butt is sometimes necessary to let them know that their behavior is inappropriate. A swat on the bottom does not result in unnecessary pain or lasting effects. But a few guidelines I used in raising five, well-behavied sons:
1. NEVER hit in the face--EVER, EVER, EVER.
2. Always remove from the room to spat on the butt, never in front of family and never, EVER in front of friends or classmates.
3. Always show afterwards an increase amount of affection and love otherwise they will esteem you to be their enemy. After the punishment everything is back to normal and no grudges are ever held.
4. Equal to the punishment for inappropriate behavior must be a reward for appropriate behavior. Oftentimes attention, hugs, and positve words of encourage go much further than toys, money, or food.
When they get older (10+) generally removing them from where they WANT to be is sufficient punishment or taking away those items like most enjoy (cell-phone, computer, video games, television, or necessary medication [kidding]).

When a child is old enough to rationally know the difference between appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior then they are too old to spank, for most kids this is around 9 or 10 yrs, however in extreme circumstances even older children benefit from a swat on the padded portions

Yes I do. Some kids need spankings. I was spanked as a child when I did something wrong. When they get to be teens maybe you can try punishments instead of spanking.

I got spanked up until I was 8 or 9. Then I got sent to stand in "the corner" for 15 or 30 minutes

Absolutely. The Bible says to spank your children. This nation still claims him on the money and in the pledge of allegiance. Until they outlaw it here, I will spank my children. When they do, I will more to a country that hasn't... LOL. I am a big fan of timeouts, but sometimes that just isn't enough. It depends on the child as to how often they need it and when they are too old. But definately by puberty you should not be spanking them. That's just weird.

I got spankings too. And none of the four of us children had to be put on ritolin or aderol, or anything like that to calm us down.
I don't know if I'd do it to my kids; and I definitely think there is a too old (10?) but I'm not really sure that that is.

I beleive in spankings.. when i was little I got a few (not beatings) just a wack if I acted up.
But my mom always says now that i was a great kid! I was always on my best behavior in public & never pulled a tantrum! This was because I knew then.. if I was bad.. I would be in trouble!
So spank them .. then they'll learn!

I think kids are too old to be spanked when they are 10. I think an apropriate punishment is banning something for a week, such as watching tv or going on the computer. i think grounding is too harsh.
good luck!<3 (pleae dont spank anyone)

in very rare cases would we spank. I did get spankings, but don't see the point now. I stopped getting them at age 11 or 12.
