While the creature in Alien was an intelligent, predatory creature, it was clearly hunting its prey, picking off the weakest, and isolating the stronger prey, so that it could use its abilities in the best environment. By sticking to the shadows, climbing the walls and ceilings, and moving through ductwork, it was able to use stealth to attack. Clearly, Ripley evolved into the smartest prey, and would not have been taken off-guard easily. The creature in alien hunts the way a animal would hunt, as opposed to the creature in Predator, who hunted the way a human would, relying more on weapons and technology. The Alien creature had enough intelligence to hide in the life pod, but not enough intelligence to use tools or weapons or build spaceships. If you remember, Ripley goes to the life pod before she trys to blow the ship, indicating that it was a place she would return to. Whether the Alien observed this behaviour, or smelled her scent there, is not known. It did have enough intelligence to understand that the cat was a creature the humans valued, even if it had no concept of a pet; the Alien used lesser creatures for hosts and possibly food, and its behaviour toward the cat is understandable: it was not a threat, and could be captured or killed later. I don't think the Alien was sedated, I think it knew the life pod was a good place to corner its prey.
